#139: 10th anniversary special! O Caledonia vs The Sundial, and celebrating 10 years

Shirley Jackson, Elspeth Barker, and your emails – welcome to episode 139 of Tea or Books?!

Can you believe we’ve been going for ten years? It’s wild to me! In the first half of the episode we compare two gothic-inspired novels – O Caledonia by Elspeth Barker and The Sundial by Shirley Jackson. In the second half, we share lots of lovely, lovely emails from you guys. We asked about the books and episodes that stand out from our first decade – and were so touched by everyone who got in touch. Apologies for the handful of people who messaged after we’d recorded. I’m afraid you aren’t in the episode, but we were grateful for the messages of course.

You can get in touch with suggestions, comments, questions etc (please do!) at teaorbooks[at]gmail.com – we’d love to hear from you, even if I’m quite bad at replying quickly. Find us at Spotify, Apple podcasts, wherever you get your podcasts. If you’re able to, we’d really appreciate any reviews and ratings you can leave us. And you can support the podcast at Patreon.

Because there are so many books and authors mentioned in this episode, I’m not going to do a full list – but if you’d like anything clarified, do ask in the comments.

Really enjoyed this episode, as ever. Thank you for mentioning me but I am so embarrassed to realise I said I enjoyed your episode on David Copperfield, which of course you haven’t covered. I was writing something about David Copperfield at the time and actually meant to mention your episode on A Room of One’s Own/A Bookshop of One’s Own. I think this safely proves I cannot multitask! Congratulations again, on 10 years.

Thank you Simon and Rachel for another wonderful episode. It’ was lovely to hear your warm gentle, teasing, and appreciation of each other,. and to hear all the congratulatory comments. Your podcast is a beautiful antidote in our times of so much doom news and negativity.

Here’s to the next 10 years and 235 books!

I’m very much looking forward to discovering your 10 favourite books to date. And I am very curious to find out how many I will then have to rush out and acquire my own copy because I have so far not been tempted to do so by one or both of you!

Well, now I must read The Sundial.

Simon, Rachel, heartfelt congratulations on the tenth anniversary of Tea or Books? If I’m right, tin is the appropriate gift. I have two cans of the finest Quebec maple syrup waiting for you. The catch is that you have to visit Ottawa to pick them up.

I’ve enjoyed your podcast from the start, and feel bad that I’ve rarely left a comment. I expect I’m not alone in this. Today, I revisited to a favourite, episode #101, in which Rachel goes through Simon’s bookcases.

Rachel, you may wish to give Leacock a chance. Simon refers to him as Canadian, but he was born in Swanmore, Hampshire.

Simon, this Montrealer was brought up to say “Toronto,” not “Torawno.” Do not get me started on the pronunciation of tomato.

Here’s to you you both! Here’s to the next ten years!
