What should our next club be?

Thanks to everyone for taking part! I’ve now updated the list in the previous post, so it should have everything that was newly published this week. And such variety. It’s the first year we’ve done which didn’t have any REALLY famous book published, I think – usually there’s been a Rebecca or something that people can turn to if nothing else appeals, and 1944 has made us all think outside the box a bit.

And what of next time? We do these clubs every six months, and made our way through the decades 1920s to 1970s. 1944 was drawn by a random number generator (and it was great to do a wartime year). For the next one – we’d like suggestions! Karen and I decided to turn things over to the readers – ideally between 1920 and 1979, but not inescapably – let us know if there’s any year you think we should be reading, and the reason why. Once we’ve got a healthy number of suggestions, Karen and I will put our heads together and make a decision. Criteria tbd!

Pop something in the comments here, or on Karen’s post.

1944 turned out to be a very varied and interesting year, didn’t it Simon? As for next time – well, I can’t wait to see what the suggestions are! :)

I don’t have any particular year in mind, but I favor the earlier rather than the later years. I can remember some of the books from the 60’s and 70’s from reading them when they were new! It’s more fun for me to see what was being written earlier.

Late as usual – I read Razors Edge by W Somerset Maugham and Narrow Boat by L T C Rolt – I am not a reviewer – enjoyed these very differing books . And how about 1918 or 1919 as we come to remembering the end of the Great War…

I’d love to read more from the 1950s (1959 looks a really strong year on Wikipedia). One of categories in my year-end stats is always No of books read from before I was born… and 1959 is just there!

As I already said over on Karen blog. I really rather fancy 1926. I have already read some good books from that year, and I have at least a couple of others.

I second 1959, some fantastic novels (some of which I have even read!) such as Henderson the Rain King, Naked Lunch, The Tin Drum, Momento Mori, The Baron in the Trees (English translation) etc.
