To Dot or Not To Dot

This post will pop up as I am sauntering around Edinburgh, having all manner of larks, I suspect… how many books do you think I’ve bought by now?

Anyway, I was just musing on the layout of my blog…. I’m not one of those who likes to change things often (as you’ll probably have noticed) but I was thinking about making a small change – I was pondering over getting rid of the background dots! Instead, it would be plain white… but I’m not sure. Being as friendly and nice as you can be, let’s put this to a vote! (Which, of course, I might not follow… being a contrary fellow.)

Do you like the dots, or should they go??

Simon, As for the dots, I am neutral. I have to say, that until I read your post, I never noticed them! I'm too busy reading your posts that the background is just that: background. That said, if you make a change, I hope it will be something equally "neutral," and not distracting from what you write.

I have to second Linda. I'm neutral. I just don't pay attention to backgrounds unless they are distracting.

I agree as well. I wouldn't have chosen the dots myself but they don't bother me. I'm more interested in what's between the dots!

obviously, I like them! But I picked them partly because they wouldn't overwhelm the content.

I like the dots. I like blogs that have some sort of color(s). It does not ditract me or pull me away from your posts.

Waiting to see what you bring back from Scotland.

Re the dotty background! I am always in favour of a clear background as I do have a problem with reading. But, that is just me.

I'm also a bit neutral on the subject. I don't mind the dots but it is also good to have a bit of colour, as long as it's not intrusive or distracting. Sometimes you just feel like a change though :-)

I like the dots actually, but the blog would look just as good without them.

I like the dots and I think plain white would be boring.

The dots are one of the things that let me know I've arrived at yours! BUT, removing them wouldn't be a life or death decision so give it try just for fun and see how it sits with you. Everyone is right, it's the writing that really matters.

Well, I seem to be alone in this opinion so far but I would say lose the dots. Your content and images are outstanding and I think the starkness, the cleanness of a white background would just make them stand out more. Especially your illustrations.

The dots scream "choose from one of these templates" to me, so I say lose them.

I'm kind of impressed you have any grasp of web design (I think I may have stereotyped you!)

I would prefer a clear background. The dots are not particularly intrusive on the main bit but I find it a strain to read the 50 books you must read column.

I open about 20 blogs in one go across the tabs of my browser. When I see the dots I know I've got to Stuck-in-a-Book and get my "wanted" notebook out to keep track of your recommended titles! I shall be confused with the dots unless you pick something else distinctive :-)

So far it looks as though those who wish the dots to go will have their hopes dashed! I think I shall stay neutral and merely point out that is already possible to read your posts 'dot free' by reading them via a feed reader such as Google Reader or Netvibes. Admittedly, that doesn't help anyone struggling to follow the entries in your side columns.

I hope you had an enjoyable time in Edinburgh.

I like the dots. You NEVER change your blog unlike some of us more fickle people and so like Darlene said, the dots let me know I'm at Simon's! BUT if you fancy a change, go ahead. I like a change every six months or so and it keeps things fresh for me.

Hope you are having super fun in Scotland and I am looking forward to seeing your book haul!

Simon I suggest you do whatever you want with the background! As to book haul, how can I guess? I travel very light when I go most places for a couple of nights so I'd be limited by my own carrying capacity. Now if I assume you might be like me (i.e. you haven't taken a half-full big wheeled suitcase) then I'd guess at something around 20 paperbacks (or somewhat fewer hardbacks) might use up your carrying capacity. So that's my estimate.

Nix the dots, please! They distract from the terrific content.
