StuckinaBook’s Weekend Miscellany

Friends, I have Covid. At the time of writing (Friday evening) it isn’t too bad – coldy symptoms and exhausted – so hopefully it’ll stay that way. Hopefully the days of isolation will help me get through some books, though early signs suggest it might be better at tackling the Netflix queue.

They: The Lost Dystopian 'Masterpiece' (Emily St. John Mandel) By Kay DickAnyway, whether you’re at home or out and about, here is the usual Miscellany to help kick off your weekend….

1.) The link – I am heartbroken that Neighbours is facing the axe. For those not in the know, it’s an Australian soap opera – and, except my family, has been the longest constant in my life. I’ve been watching for 24 years, and love mocking how silly it is, but love it all the same. If you fancy signing a petition to keep it alive, then what’s the worst that can happen?

2.) The book – everyone is talking about the newly rediscovered They by Kay Dick, reprinted by different publishers in the UK and US in recent weeks. I only know Kay Dick for her interviews with Ivy Compton-Burnett and Stevie Smith in Ivy and Stevie, but if They is even a tenth as good as people are saying, then I’m sure it’s worth seeking out.

3.) The blog post – I was so delighted to see Asha’s review of Which Way? by Theodora Benson at her excellently titled blog, A Cat, A Book, and A Cup of Tea. And those are exactly the three things that are going to occupy the next part of my evening.

Oh so sorry to hear you have the dreaded covid. That’s awful news. Take good care. xx
Margery Sharp would be rewarding company on the couch.
And really I think English folk are more devoted to Neighbours than we Aussies! But that could be a personal viewpoint.

Bad luck on Covid and hope you feel better soon. I have just begun watching Dopesick, about the opioid/Oxycontin addiction crisis in America. It is on Disney +, but you could sign up and just binge it while ill! Reading Rebecca Solnit’s Wanderlus, and interspersing it with The Prelude. Take care, and thanks for tthe great blog.

So sorry to read of your Covid, Simon. Horrid. At least Hargreaves will enjoy having his human close by all day. Take care.

Ugh, poor you, hopefully you are at the supposedly mild end of the virus. Enjoy your binge watching

Covid in this house too. Still waiting to feel like reading, which is unheard of. Before this struck picked up secondhand book The Journeying Boy by Michael Innes. Crime novel published 1949. Writing of its time, but still enjoyable. Take care

Aw, damn… I hope you have a complete and speedy recovery. It is NO fun, from what I saw with my son and my daughter.

That said… Neighbors, Simon? Really? I would never have guessed that one!

I’m so sorry to hear that you’ve got COVID, Simon. Wishing you all the very best for a speedy and smooth recovery. Netflix definitely sounds like the way forward for the next few days. I’d been saving Season 4 of Call My Agent for just such an occasion; but then I got Shingles in January and had to dip in. Pure unalloyed pleasure, just as I’d anticipated!

Best wishes for a mild case and a quick recovery! I don’t know whether you have read or seen The Forsyte Saga, but I have just started watching the first TV adaptation on YouTube. Black and white, but amazing performances and lots of episodes! Pure late Victorian soap opera!

So sorry to hear you got Covid. Wishing you a swift recovery! I couldn’t bear to look at a screen during my weeks of quarantine and found the Margery Allingham crime novels the right level entertaining and easy-on-the-brain :)
