Some photos from my week…

I don’t take that many photos nowadays – in 2011 I took a photo everyday, and it was a really fun way to document the year, but I think maybe I reached saturation point. Still, I should take more… and in the spirit of that, here are a few I’ve taken on a couple of recent occasions:

Although I’m still working the odd Saturday at the Bodleian, my job at OUP means that I’ve now finished my regular evening shifts (and casual daytime hours) there – quite a moving goodbye to people I’ve worked with, on and off, for five and a half years.  Most Reader Services staff signed a very jolly card, and Lovely Verity got me a Radcliffe Camera Goodbye Cake – thanks Verity!

My friend Lucy and I were in London on Monday night for the launch of The Real Mrs. Miniver by Ysenda Maxtone Graham at Slightly Foxed. It was good fun, and the book looks absolutely stunning – my favourite colour, for starters. (These photos were taken on my ‘phone, hence their lack of high quality.)

I should explain… this photo of Lucy is something of an in-joke, since I’ve been encouraging her for years to write a review for SiaB (since she knows loads about modern literature) and she demurs – so I said she could just hold and book and give a thumbs up. And now she has!

I must take more photos… it’s fun sharing recent events in my life this way!

It was lovely, and especially nice to go with a dear friend I've been missing :)

What a fab cake! And I love, love, love that shade of blue on The Real Mrs Miniver. I am shallow enough to want a copy of my own for that reason alone (though, in this case, I do also want to read the book).

Isn't it gorgeous? Not shallow at all (well, only a little.) AND it would look lovely on the shelf, too – sometimes I buy books because they have beautiful covers, and realise that I'll never actually look at the covers. I should buy books for their spines… (or, y'know, the content.)

That is an amazing little cake! And I'm with you and Claire – I would almost buy the book for that blue cover alone. Thanks for sharing the pictures with us.

Verity's cake looks too lovely to slice up but something tells me you did anyway. And I love Lucy's multi-coloured manicure!

Oh, yes, I certainly ate it. And Lucy's fingernails were fab; I complimented her on them :)

Is it wrong that I want dozens of copies of the book, to have in colourful piles?

I thought I recognised the author's name (quite distinctive you'll agree) – she wrote, I think in the early 90s, "The Church Hesitant: A Portrait of the Church of England"

Ah, there you go! And Jan Struther wrote hymns… it all comes full circle.

Yes you must continue taking photos. Makes a blog so much more personal and think how we would have missed seeing that cake and that beautiful shade of blue. Snap away, we're watching!

Sadly my camera is now misbehaving! Hopefully it'll right itself… (it is, coincidentally, a lighter shade of that same blue.)

You didn't put in a bit about how my forehead isn't that big in real life!!

And thanks for the manicure comments!

    Lge.

I turned pure green over the Slightly Foxed launch party. Vising there (and many other places in England) is on my bucket list. And thank you for reminding me that I must order a copy of The Real Mrs. Miniver.

It is a lovely little shop – and a really great selection of secondhand books, alongside their own publications.
