Signed Solar!

It’s an embarrassment of riches around the blogosphere at the moment, with at least one other blog I’ve spotted running this competition – for a signed copy of Ian McEwan’s latest offering, Solar. Thank you, Random House, for offering this!

Also, there are Solar T-shirts to be won – so mention in the comments if you’d fancy one of these, otherwise I’ll assume you’re just in the draw for the book.

And, because just saying ‘me please!’ isn’t all that entertaining for you, I’d like to know which Ian McEwan novel is your favourite, or (if you’ve not read any or many) which you fancy reading. Other than Solar, that is…

For me – it’s a toss up between Atonement and Black Dogs. I’m going to go with Black Dogs. And the one I want to read next? The Child in Time, I think.

Can I enter for yours and the other Simon's? I hope so! My favourite McEwan is a toss up between Atonement and Enduring Love, though as I said on the other Simon's blog, I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with McEwan and some of his books I've hated with a passion! I'll be interested to see where I stand on his latest!

My favourite is definitely Atonement, but like Rachel I have hated others (Saturday and, sorry Simon, but also A Child in Time).

Mary – I was deeply unimpressed by Saturday too, so perhaps I should avoid A Child in Time – I just thought I might like other early McEwan novels, since I liked Black Dogs…

I'm not sure I can put my name here since I'm not in the UK, so if not–feel free to toss me out :). My favorite is Atonement. I was a little underwhelmed by On Chesil Beach, but it might have been a timing thing as I read it when it won the Booker and everyone was talking about it. I think the hype did me in.

I'd love to enter for both the book and the T-shirts. My favourite Ian McEwan novel at the moment, because it often changes, is On Chesil Beach. I couldn't put this tragic little morsel down.

My favourite McEwan is either Atonement or The Child in Time. I listened to Nathaniel Parker reading TCIT on audio & it was one of my best audio experiences, incredibly moving. So, I think TCIT wins out. Simon, I couldn't stand Saturday but TCIT is so much better even without NP reading it aloud. Please try it.

My favourite McEwan is Atonement or maybe Enduring Love (the first one of his I read). It seems I'm in a minority, but I did like Saturday.

Please may I be entered in this competition for the book and T-shirt if possible. My favourite has to be Atonement, but I also enjoyed on Chesil Beach. So far these are the only McEwan books I have read, but would like to read more.

Just entered this on the other Simon's blog. You KNOW how much I love McEwan! Atonement is still my fave but I love black dogs the second best (which I think I recommended to you??) I can lend you Child in Time if you like? Not trying to sway the draw! I know Patch is too savvy for that!

Probably Enduring Love for me. I didn't like On Chesil Beach. A Child in Time is definitely worth reading – it is the one of his that has stayed in my mind for the longest time.

Enter me please. I loved Atonement, my favorite, though Enduring Love would be a close second. I liked Chesil Beach but really hated Black Dogs! And didn't like Amsterdam.

A Child in Time. It sounds like I need to read Black Dogs soon, since everyone seems to enjoy it, but right now I Have Amsterdam out from the library.

Hello from a long-term lurker. I've read probably about half of McEwan's published output and rate his short stories highly. First Love, Last Rites is a superb collection. Of the novels, though I admire several of the others greatly, it's a straight choice between The Cement Garden and The Child in Time, both of them books that continue to haunt the memory long after reading. On this occasion I'll go for The Cement Garden – I love the youthful rawness of McEwan's writing and the cloyingly claustrophobic atmosphere.

I was going to mention this to you – I read a review yesterday that said Solar was a comedy! I really can't imagine Mr McEwan doing comedy. Not sure I want to.
Didn't think you particuarly loved any of then! You'll hate The Child in Time. It's dull. Only Ian McEwan could take a good thriller premise and make it read like the Financial Times. Not that I'm prejudiced.

I've only read very early McEwan: I loved The Cement Garden, and The Comfort of Strangers came a close second. The Child in Time is still waiting for me.

I'd love to be entered in the draw, but only for the book, please!

Oooohhhh…..so exciting! My favorite McEwan so far is Atonement (it was also my first). Atonements gave me hope for the future of the novel in English, so it had a pretty big impact! I was a little bewildered by Enduring Love and distinctly disliked On Chesil Beach (but I will admit I skimmed it at a bookstore, so I should probably give it another chance!). Thanks to Atonement, however, I will probably at lease attempt to read everything by McEwan. He's wonderful!

My favourite is Atonement, not that I've read all of his books. Didn't like Saturday at all although my book group had a good discussion about it as it divided opinion so much.

Ooh, I'd really love this book. My favorite McEwan book is a tie between On Chesil Beach and Amsterdam. If forced to chose, I'd probably pick On Chesil Beach. I haven't read Atonement or Saturday yet, though.
