Happy birthday me!

This is the real-life-birthday, rather than the blog birthday – and although today will be quite quiet, I spent the past couple of days in Bristol seeing Colin (cos it’s his birthday too!) and my ex-housemate and joint-bestie Mel.  And because everyone should have a birthday cake at least near their birthday, I took one to Colin.  It looked a little the worse for wear after a train journey and wandering around Bristol for ages, but this is what it looked like initially…

Despite having made hundreds of cakes, I’ve never really decorated one.  This does look like a child made it, but I was pretty pleased for a first attempt with fondant icing etc.!

Many happy returns! I hope your birthday includes some books (I always treat myself, in case no one else does!)

Many happy returns to you both, and may you be blessed with gifts of the bookish sort.

Happy Birthday, Simon. And Colin too. I hope this birthday week is filled to the brim with books and friends. And cake.

Well done on the fondant icing. My daughter is about to attempt it first time, tomorrow, and I volunteered to help, because I know nothing about it either. It's for my grandson's 9th birthday party, Sat, though the big day was yesterday.

The things we do for love….

Happy birthday! What matters most is not how the cake looks but how it tastes!

Happy birthday, Simon & twin! And the cake looks marvelous. (What the heck, ANY cake looks marvelous to me. Haven't had a cake round here for much too long… Oh. Where was I?) That's right, back on track. Wishing you both many happy returns of the day!

Somewhat belatedly, Happy Birthday to you and Colin – I hope you both had a wonderful day. And I love the cake: that's exactly the sort of cake that's crying out to be eaten. If icing is too creative I find it it very off-putting, because it looks like a piece of art, rather than a piece of food!

Happy Birthday, Simon! (and Colin) My son's birthday is on the 9th, not that that makes you triplets or anything, but it's entertainingly close. I hope you had wonderful celebrations. And thank you for posting more about your thesis – it looks extremely interesting. Will you be publishing it, do you think? (she says hopefully)
