A lovely Penguiny find

Despite having a whole weekend doing basically nothing, I have still failed to put together a review – or even read very much, actually – so instead I shall show off a recent find!  I don’t think it’s especially rare or anything, but I think it’s a fantastic example of Penguin cover design in its heyday.  And it cost 30p.  I didn’t know there were still places where you could get books for 30p! Turns out the charity shops of Headington are rather cheaper than the charity shops of Oxford.

I love this. I went to book fair on the weekend and got a Penguin Modern Classic – One Day in the Life ofIvan Denisovich for a £1 – a bit more expensive than this one but still amazing.

That's so freaky – I bought the same edition yesterday. It's been on my wishlist for ages. Mine was a whole AUD 3.25 (about 2 quid), so you win!

Vicki! How bizarre. I have to say, it wasn't on my wishlist – but I suppose I might read it now that I've got it ;)

Some of the designs from this period are so great. (Do you know Karyn's blog apenguinaweek.blogspot.com? Lots of fab covers on there – and fab reviews too, of course!)

Lazy weekends are good to have now and again! What a bargin! There aren't too many 2ond hand places to shop near where I live, but at the library book sales, I often can pick up paperbacks for $0.50.

Nice! I think Oxford prices things quite high, generally (especially Blackwell's secondhand department, which is absurdly overpriced) so it's nice to be a couple miles out, for book prices if nothing else.

Just finished a Penguin copy of The Masters by C.P. Snow, cover drawing by Lynton Lamb. Loved the book and the edition and have had the good fortune to find two other old Penguin Snows: Corridors of Power and The Affair, the latter with a cover illustration by Philippe Jullian. Had never heard of the artists before; had barely heard of C.P. Snow before. Now am wondering why no one had ever before talked to me about Mr. Snow. On the strength of The Masters, he is already on my list of favourite authors. Could you talk about him, Simon?

Sadly I can't, Renata, because I've never read any! I do know that he was married to Pamela Hansford Johnson (and have read three books by her) but aside from that, I know nothing… but it sounds like I'll have to investigate.
