A Gallico Giveaway!

The lovely people at Bloomsbury have got in touch with me: they have eights sets of Mrs. Harris MP and Mrs. Harris Goes To Moscow to give away, and decided that the wonderful readers of Stuck-in-a-Book were the right types to receive them!  Trâm-Anh knew that I loved Gallico’s novels Coronation and Love of Seven Dolls, and though somehow I’ve only just started Mrs. Harris series (halfway through Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris and loving it), it was always more in the way of saving-something-brilliant than uncertain-I’ll-enjoy.

So, if you live in the UK and fancy the chance to win those two books (pictured below, in situ in Bloomsbury’s offices – aren’t they striking and gorgeous?) just leave a comment with the place you’d most like to visit, but have yet to see.  (Mine, by the way, is vague – Scandinavia.)

I know that quite a few people have trouble commenting here – if you want to enter but can’t comment, email me simondavidthomas[at]yahoo.co.uk and I’ll put you in the draw.

In about a week’s time, I’ll do a draw.  Good luck!  With eight sets of two to win, your chances are pretty good… do feel free to spread the word :)

I have read both these books and found them very entertaining, particularly Mrs. Harris goes to Paris. It is called Flowers for Mrs Harris in the vintage Penguin book series. I also read Mrs Harris goes to Washington which was funny as well. I read them last year before I started doing TravellinPenguin so have not reviewed them there.
I am heading to South America (Chile,Peru,Boliva and ARgentine) in less than 2 weeks- why I have not been blogging as much but plan to blog up book/literature/travel experiences as I go so stay tuned. ALL the best. Pam (want to go to Mongolia sometime)

Oh these are gorgeous editions! There are so many places that I would love to visit but haven't yet. Thailand, Vietnam and Japan are top of my list at the moment. I would also love to visit all the Laura Ingalls Wilder homesites in America, as well as Louisa May Alcott's house.

I have Mrs Harris Goes to Paris,so I'd love to be in the draw. I am incredibly under-travelled so the world is very much my oyster. I'd like to go to San Francisco one day and I'd love to see Tuscany in the spring.

What delightful editions – and I've been meaning to read some of the 'Mrs Harris' series for some time now. I am woefully under-travelled, I must admit, but I think that Argentina is top of my list of places I'd love to visit at some point – ooh – and East Hampton, New York so I can stalk the Barefoot Contessa.

I haven't read any of the Mrs Harris books, but Paul Gallico's The Small Miracle is a beautiful book. I'd like to go to Venice (haven't been there), or anywhere in Italy (I've been to a few places but would happily re-visit).

I'd love to go to Copenhagen (thanks to The Killing and Borgen I now have the mistaken belief I could even communicate in Danish). Also New Zealand because it looks so beautiful! Failing that, I'd read the Mrs Harris books anywhere!(LOVED the first 2). Thanks for the chance!

If I could visit anywhere it would be Russia. I've been fairly obsessed with the place and its culture since my teens but never, alas, have been lucky enough for a visit. Life and family got in the way and I think it unlikely I will ever get to go. Some of my favourite authors are Russian – Mayakovsky, Dostoyevsky, Gogol, Tolstoy, Chekhov – and something about the country and its people, its art and its soul seems to speak to me.

Lovely idea for a draw Simon and I'll keep my fingers crossed!

New England in the Fall would be my destination especially Vermont which is Dorothy Canfield's adopted state, an author I love.

    Thanks Simon for the draw.

I too would like to go to Prince Edward Island, or alternatively Trelew, Patagonia – my great-grandfather emigrated there in the 19th century, leaving his family in Wales. He planned to send for them when he had enough money, but he & his wife each made new lives for themselves, so my grandfather stayed in Wales with his mother.
Thank you for the opportunity to win these beautiful books.

I didn't even know there were Mrs Harris books after the first two! I'm another one for Prince Edward Island, or else to see some of the sites where Laura Ingalls Wilder lived.

Mine is Iceland. I studied Old Icelandic (as you do) as part of my English degree, having loved the mythology and wanting to get started on the sagas. Although I wasn't the best student, I did love the sagas and cemented a life-long friendship with my friend Nick (23 years and still going) who was in my class (of three). I read all I can on Iceland, could pronounce the name of That Volcano and have recently started re-reading the sagas … but I have still never managed to go there.

I enjoyed the first two Mrs Harris books and would love to read more about her. The Chalet School books by Brent-Dyer were favourites when I was a child and turned me in to an avid reader. So it would have to be the Austrian Tyrol for me where the early ones in the series were set.

I'm surprised no-one else has picked my dream destination of India. I've read so many novels set there from Kipling and Forster via Rumer Godden to Rohinton Mistry. I want to visit and see it for myself.
